As we are a boutique winery, we only make wine when we think that the fruit looks really good
(not just because we made one last year).
In 2010 we didn't make a single varietal Merlot,
but the 2011 fruit looked sensational so I'm expecting we'll do one then!

The 2009 Merlot is sensational!
It bursts out of the glass with mint, spice and earty aromas.
The palate is plump and supple with blood plums, pepper and black cherries.
Lovely oak integration finishing with fine tannins. Very good length.
This is the perfect wine for Summer...its got lovely rich, ripe fruit, but its not too full bodied, just right for Lamb Chops on the BBQ.

2008 Merlot
This is the first single varietal Merlot that we've every made at Upper Reach. The 2008 Merlot looked so fantastic, that Derek selected the best barrels for the stand out 2008 Merlot.
This wine shows, earthy, dark plum flavours, with a hint of mint and savoury oak on the nose.
Be warned, we're going to run out of this very soon! The 2009 is looking pretty good though.
Food Match: Veal Scaloppine with Mushrooms & Marsala, lamb tagine
Renee's putting it in her Lamb Shanks, she's leaving the stock out and replacing it with Merlot! These shanks are good, and there's always a glass left for the chef!
